OHURA CONNECTOR
Grade 3 (Intermediate) | 50kms
A Heartland Ride for Bike Packers and Adventurers
Travel from the Timber Trail to the Forgotten World Highway
Take the scenic (and safer) option to connect with the Forgotten World Highway.
If you’re heading to Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono, continue on the Ongarue Back Road to Taumaranui to join the Mountains to Sea Connector Ride.
Head South on Ongarue Back Road until you cross under a railway underpass, then onwards to a right turn across an old railway bridge crossing the Okahukura River.
Cross onto SH4 (take care) before turning left after 50m to Okahukura Saddle Road.
Enjoy the quiet gravel roads as you start heading up the Okahukura Saddle climb – keep an eye out for the historic watering trough built into the papa on your left (these are a feature of the wider area).
At Matière turn left onto Ohura Road. There is a picnic area and the Matière Cosmopolitan Club along here. (After approx. 10kms).
Turn right after 6kms and cross over the bridge following Ohura North Road. Veer left at the junction before turning right in 5kms into Ohura Road before arriving at the Ohura Township 50kms from where you began this ride. A great stop for refueling and a dip or check out the old Prison.
Finally, the route takes Mangaparo Road to SH43, where it meets with the Forgotten World Highway Heartland Ride
This is the route taken on the Kopiko Aotearoa
